Acupuncture
Description
Acupuncture is one of the many skills used within physiotherapy as an integrated approach to the management of pain and inflammation. It is used as a means of stimulating the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.
Acupuncture within physiotherapy is used against the background of clinical and research evidence. The concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] is an ancient system of written scripts as far back as 10,000BC, founded on the holistic concept of treatment and an acknowledgement of the body's ability to return to its balanced state of health, given the correct stimulus to do so.
Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] believes needling acupressure points along the meridian lines re-balance your energy flow throughout your body. Whereas Western acupuncture is believed to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissues.
Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system to make biochemical changes around the body to promote physical and emotional emotional well-being. Acupuncture is a non-noxious stimuli which can desensitise the autonomic nervous system, bringing the heighten state of stress, anxiety and pain down.
Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into the soft tissue of the body related to the individual's pain or problem. The number of needles used will depend on what part of the body is being treated. While the insertion of needles can cause some discomfort for some people, acupuncture is not generally considered a noxious or harmful stimulus.
In fact acupuncture is often used to alleviate pain and other symptoms and is considered a safe and effective form of alternative medicine. The sensation of discomfort that some people may experience during acupuncture is usually mild and temporary and is often outweighed by the therapeutic benefits of the treatment.
